EU Login app – no more push notifications from 31 October

The EU Login app is one of the ways you can perform multifactor authentication to sign into applications protected with EU Login.

From 31 October, the app is changing how you receive requests to authenticate your login to EU services by PIN code or biometrics. These requests will appear inside the app instead of via push notifications that pop up on your device.

How it works

Enter your username and password into https://ecas.ec.europa.eu/cas/login as usual. If you select EU Login Mobile App PIN Code as your multifactor authentication method, open the EU Login app on your mobile device to see the authentication request.

Once you are in the app, you will see the screen ‘Pending authentication requests’. If you see a request launched by you, press ‘CONTINUE’ then enter your PIN code or biometrics when prompted.

For a quick guide to the new way to authenticate via the EU Login app with a PIN code or biometrics, see this infographic.

Why is this change?

This change is being made to help you to protect your accounts.

In recent years, people have been receiving more and more push notifications on their mobile devices. Many people no longer check the content of these requests and hackers use this ‘notification fatigue’ to gain access to accounts on an almost daily basis.

This change is a preventative measure to protect your account. It makes the EU Login app, which is already a safe way to authenticate your identity, even safer.

Who is impacted?

This change applies to everyone who uses the EU Login Mobile app for multifactor authentication by PIN code or biometrics.

To benefit from the enhanced security of ‘silent’ authentication requests:

  • iOS users must have version 1.10.2 or higher of the EU Login app. iOS users with older versions of the app will no longer be able to confirm authentication requests by PIN code or biometrics as from 31 October. Please note: The new behaviour requires version 13 or higher of the iOS operating system.

  • Android users must have version 1.10.10 (released 31 October) or higher. Users with older versions of the app will still be able to receive authentication requests as before but are strongly encouraged to update for optimum security.

Most devices are set to update software automatically (see ‘Settings’ in your device). To update your EU Login app manually, open the App Store or Google Play on your mobile device, search for the EU Login app and tap ‘UPDATE’ next to the app icon. If you do not see ‘UPDATE’, you have the latest version of the app.

I don’t have the app

If you don’t have the app, you can find it in the App Store (iOS apps) and Google Play (Android apps). You can also choose other ways to authenticate in order to sign into EU Login, listed under Choose your verification method on the EU Login page
