Commission adopts the Evaluation of the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community

The Commission has adopted the Evaluation of the performance of the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community (TCc) for the period January 2013 to December 2018. Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said: “The evaluation shows that the Aid Programme had a positive effect on the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community. I am pleased to note the large number of scholarships awarded to young Turkish Cypriots which have given them a unique opportunity to learn about the EU. It will hopefully inspired them to help build bridges between the two communities in Cyprus.” The evaluation found that the Aid Programme is coherent and efficient with an overall high degree of satisfaction among beneficiaries of the EU assistance. It fostered confidence in the Turkish Cypriot community bringing it closer to the EU values. In particular, the Aid Programme provided 870 scholarships to young Turkish Cypriots to study or train in the EU and 22 grants for civil society organisations. The Aid programme also enabled the completion of 42 large and medium sized cultural heritage projects and provided grants for 40 small and medium-sized businesses to support the socio-economic development of the community and thus ultimately foster the reunification of Cyprus. The programme aims to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus. It is based on Council Regulation (EC) No 389/2006 and it has the general objective to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging its economic development. The overall budget allocated within the scope of the Aid Programme between 2006 and 2021 totals approximately €623 million and it is managed by the Commission. The evaluation was made for the assistance totalling €199 million in the 2013-2018 period.
