About the programme

ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is a large-scale experiment designed to prove the scientific and technical viability of fusion as a new energy source, and to take fusion energy to the threshold of industrial exploitation. ITER is expected to start operations in the South of France in 2025, and will be fully operational in 2035.

The European contribution to this international project is under the responsibility of the European joint undertaking Fusion for Energy (F4E) located in Barcelona (Spain). A bilateral collaboration between the EU and Japan runs in parallel to ITER and aims to accelerate the development of fusion power. Most funding is distributed through calls for tender.
