Launch of pilot phase of the green consumption pledge initiative

This event outlined the Green Consumption Pledges initiative and its pilot phase, and introduced the pledging pioneers. Their is a second wave for other companies to join.

One of the major challenges faced by societies around the globe is how to ensure a rapid transition to a sustainable future. The European Union has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This will require determined efforts from everyone, including policy-makers, businesses, and of course consumers. In addition to and beyond its legislative work, the Commission seeks to support all actors to work towards reaching EU environmental goals.

With this objective in mind, the Commission launched the Pilot Phase of the Green Consumption Pledge.

It calls upon non-food and mixed businesses in various sectors of the economy to undertake concrete, public and verifiable commitments to reduce their overall carbon footprint, to produce and market more sustainable products and to redouble their efforts towards raising the awareness of consumers about the impact of their consumption choices. 

For companies in the food sector there is the Code of Conduct for responsible business and marketing practices under the lead of Commissioners S. Kyriakides and T. Breton.
