The fourth edition of the Just Transition Platform Meeting – Coal Regions in Transition virtual week and Carbon-intensive regions seminars took place online on 15-17 November 2021.
Like previous editions, this event was co-hosted by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER).
The meeting gathered stakeholders from EU coal, peat, shale oil and carbon-intensive regions, and delivered a range of thematic sessions, networking options enabling exchange and interaction between Member States, local and regional authorities, non-governmental organisations, business and social partners and EU institutions to learn from one another in the journey towards a just transition to a climate-neutral Europe.
The event provided a space for regions to share their experiences on their journey towards coal phase-out and gave updates on the Just Transition Fund programming negotiations and updates and lessons learnt so far on the preparations of the Territorial Just Transition Plans. The agenda also featured the launch of the Just Transition Platform (JTP) Working Groups on chemicals, steel, cement and horizontal stakeholder strategy.
The event was opened by Director-General Marc Lemaître on behalf of Commissioners Elisa Ferreira (DG REGIO) and Kadri Simson (DG ENER) and closed with a roundtable hosted by Executive Vice-President (EVP) Frans Timmermans, featuring high-level representatives of EU Member States. A multi-level dialogue was also organised by the Committee of the Regions as a side-event on 15 November.
