2nd Annual Digital Consumer Event

Information on the European Commission's Annual Digital Consumer Event 2022 (ADCE22), a spin-off of the European Union Consumer Summit.

21 November 2022 - 10:00 to 17:00 CET

The European Commission organises its second Annual Digital Consumer Event to reflect with the general public, academics, consumer and business associations, as well as authorities, on the problems consumers currently face in the digital transition.

The Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, will give the opening speech.  

The core of the event will consist of panels on the following topics: 

  • Online consumer vulnerabilities: shedding light on dark patterns, personalisation and structural asymmetries
  • Online consumer purchases: challenges raised by digital subscriptions, virtual items and the addictive use of digital products
  • Online consumer contracts: mapping unfair contract terms and the lack of transparency

The Commission will also present the progress on the Product Safety Pledge, a voluntary agreement by leading E-Commerce platforms.

Registration for active participation is open from 14 October. 

The event take place in English without interpretation.

    What problems arise from the distortion of the consumer’s freedom of choice and conduct due to practices such as dark patterns and the personalisation of commercial communications? What role does consumer law have in addressing structural asymmetries in digital markets? Is the existing EU legal framework, including the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, still fit for purpose?

Can consumer law alleviate concerns about the addictive use of digital products? Is the existing EU legal framework, including the Consumer Rights Directive, still fit for purpose?

    Which contract terms are unfairly distorting the balance between the rights and obligations of consumers and online traders? Is the existing EU legal framework, including the Unfair Contract Terms Directive, still fit for purpose?
