Product database

Products with an energy label are registered and can be consulted for information and comparison in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling.

As of 1 January 2019, suppliers (manufacturers, importers or authorised representatives established in the EU) must register their products in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). In May 2022, the database was launched for public access and consultation.

What does EPREL offer?

Consumers can find detailed information about energy labelled products and models in EPREL. It offers the possibility to identify which products have the best cost-efficiency ratio for a specific need. Information on other aspects than a product’s energy use, such as its possible water consumption, noise emission, extension of the warranty, availability of spare parts, duration or product support, is also provided.

The most efficient washing machine, for example, may have a high purchase cost, but for a numerous household, low running costs linked to electricity and water savings could compensate a high price. For a single person living in a flat, a cheaper, less energy-efficient, but very silent washing machine might be the best option. This example illustrates that the choice about the most suitable product depends on the specific user’s need and situation, and that it requires further comparison, including the purchase price. EPREL supports this comparative process by offering online information about various product's aspects, but it does not provide or take into account the product’s price.

By guiding its users towards the most energy-efficient product models while encouraging manufacturers to develop new, more efficient models to appear in the highest and more rewarding ranks, EPREL contributes to reducing the energy used and imported to the EU.

The energy labelling legislative framework covers the following product groups:

Consult the database

EPREL offers selection and sorting tools to compare and identify the products that best meet the consumer's specific needs before looking for them in physical or online stores and comparing their prices.

For each registered product, EPREL displays its energy label and provides additional information in a product's information sheet, printable and available in all official EU languages. For example, the product information for a fridge will include its

  • energy efficiency performance
  • external dimensions
  • type of compartments with their individual volume
  • guarantee offered by the supplier
  • noise emissions, etc.

When entering the database, the user can select the product group they are interested in and use the advanced search to look for specific product features, such as its dimensions, energy consumption, etc. Selection results can be sorted selecting 3 criteria simultaneously.

It is possible to scan the QR code featured on a product’s energy label (for example, in a physical  shop) to obtain additional information from the EPREL database.

Register a product (if you are a supplier)

Since 1 January 2019, suppliers (manufacturers, importers or authorised representatives established in the EU and EEA (Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein)) must register products required to have an EU energy label in the EPREL database before placing them on the EU market. As part of the Northern Ireland (XI) Protocol under the UK withdrawal agreement from the EU, these rules also apply in Northern Ireland as well (after 1 January 2021).

Manufacturers established in third countries (i.e. outside EU/EEA and XI) need an importer or a legal representative established in one of the countries mentioned above to register their products.

Before registering their products, suppliers need to register their organisation and get it electronically verified; a guideline is available for this purpose. A wiki also offers detailed instructions on how to manage the registration process in EPREL.

Energy labelling tools

The EPREL database generates all energy labels based on the data that suppliers entered when registering their product models. Every product is available from a model description page in EPREL, where labels and product information sheets can be viewed and downloaded. These labels are also available in high resolution and vectorial format for use by professionals. Access to the models description page is possible in these ways

  • for products that have the new labels, (dishwashers, washing machines, washer-dryers, electronic display, domestic refrigerators, commercial refrigerators, vehicle tyres and light sources) with a QR code, by simply scanning the code.
  • by entering the model identifier (and or the trademark) in the search page for each product group in EPREL
  • via Application Programming Interfaces (API): this modality is suggested for on-line stores that have the obligation to display label and product information sheets close to the price indication. Further guidance and information on the syntax of APIs is available in the EPREL wiki (EU login required).

As the registration of products is mandatory, manual generation of labels is only intended to “reproduce” labels for specific graphical needs (e.g. brochures or printouts on boxes): energy label templates are available for this purpose (InDesign and other file formats).
