Video interview of a Finnish firefighter, Matias Malmgren, at CERN in Geneva (Switzerland). The video will be sent to all secondary and upper-secondary schools and polytechnics in Finland when the school year starts in August, to inspire the pupils and students to learn languages. At the CERN Fire Brigade, there are firefighters from a total of 17 different European countries, which makes it a very multilingual and multicultural work environment. On the video several firefighters from different countries speak in different mother tongues. The main person interviewed is Matias, who is bilingual (Finnish and Swedish). On the video he speaks in Finnish and Swedish as well as in French and there are subtitles in Finnish and Swedish. The interviewee, Matias, had to learn French in order to be able to apply for his current position at CERN and he was chosen out of hundreds of applicants. The video will be available for the schools alone until 26 September, after which the Commission Representation in Helsinki will release it to the General public and publish it on social media.

Long night of European Literary Translation

Long night of European literary translation at the Czech Centre Berlin (without livestreaming nor recording). Translation is crucial for European culture and literature; without it, people could not communicate properly and the joint European literary canon would not exist. We will invite authors and translators and address literary translation and its advantages and challenges from different perspectives. In several sessions during the afternoon and evening the guests will talk about different topics:
4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Translation of children's literature: translators of European children's literature talk about the creative use of language.

6 – 7 p.m. Translation of books from the literary canon – looking to the past, what does it bring for the present? Translators of classical European books talk about the topic and the challenges in translating literary texts from the past, a time they did not experience themselves and a situation in which they cannot contact the author.

7.30 p.m. Dialogue between author and his/her translators or talk with two translator-authors: talk about the differences in the various languages and cultures, the challenges when it comes to translation, the way the book makes to foreign publishers, the different perception, etc.

9/9.30 p.m. The event will end with watching together the documentary 'The Woman with the Five Elephants' (Swetlana Geier).

Video about inclusive language/inclusion and European Year of Youth 2022

Through inclusive language and inclusion in general the EU wants to address as many people as possible and does not exclude certain groups of people. However, this is not always easy and most languages face challenges. Within the European Day of Languages and the European Year of Youth 2022, we will produce a video at the Samuel-Heinicke-Fachoberschule in Munich, where inclusion plays an integral part of the teaching approach. Students with and without hearing impairment are taught at the same school. In the video, you will learn how the teaching method and school life works, how the students see it, which EU projects the school has as an European Parliament Ambassador school and what the young people wish from the EU. The video will be interpreted by a sign language interpreter and will be published on 3 December (in the morning) - the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

EDL Speak dating 2022

The event will take place on 29/09/2022 in the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA) and will be open for a broad public. Everybody can try one or more languages offered, including some minority languages. There will be short five to ten-minute face-to-face sessions with professional language teachers and language university students from EUNIC countries in the Netherlands. During these sessions, one can learn a few words/expressions in a new language, get some insights into the European cultures or have a conversation /practise in a language one already masters. The event promotes the linguistic, ethnic and cultural diversity and variety of Europe to foster mutual respect and understanding. It further provides for new friendships and professional opportunities. There will be an offer in 15-25 different languages.
This year, we plan to add Ukrainian for the first time, in accordance with the conclusions of the informal Council of European ministers where it is stated: "The preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture remains an overarching consideration".
If a physical event will not be possible in case of COVID-measures, the event will be organized online (break-out rooms, set up by OBA).

Translation contest and workshop to be held during the ‘Vertaaldag’ (Translation Day) 2022

Each year, Verstegen&Stigter organizes the 'Vertaaldag' to underline the importance of translation and bring it to the attention of a wide audience. Last year, at the 'Vertaaldag' 2021, on 25 September, DGTranslation had an EDL information stand. The stand attracted many visitors (translators, linguists, General public), who came to the stand both for general information on the multilingualism policy and practices in the EU and the Commission, and for practical information on professional opportunities in DGTranslation. In the framework of the 2022 edition, the DGTranslation Field Office in the Netherlands, in cooperation with the Commission Representation in the Netherlands, will organize an EDL translation contest and workshop, to give a broad public, interested in languages, especially young people (see below), a taste of the translation profession (#DiscoverTranslation), and encourage others to continue in this field of activity. The contest and workshop will also give more visibility to DGTranslation as a translation hub and potential employer. The workshop will contribute to the promotion of multilingualism and language learning, and celebrate Europe's language diversity. The call for contributions will be published in one of the biggest national newspapers 'NRC Handelsblad' (June 2022). The DGTranslation Field Officer will write the introduction to this call for contributions and call upon the public to translate a Dutch poem in English, French or German (tbc). The selected poem has been written by one of the former 'national poets' of the Netherlands, Ramsey Nasr, on the occasion of  the opening of Europe House, in 2011: Het huis van Europa - Dichter des Vaderlands. The contest will be placed in the framework of the European Year of Youth and will be promoted in particular among young people (15-25 years) in underprivileged areas of the country, from high schools to different types of professional education. The Representation in the Netherlands will use its broad network (European Youth Council, Europe Direct centres) to reach this audience. The network of Juvenes Translatores schools will also be used.

Young people translate... and help the community

Gathering of young people who frequently use several languages and act as translators and interpreters to help their families or members of their community with their integration into Spanish society, or who participate in social volunteer projects thanks to their knowledge and interest in languages. The idea is to make a short recorded presentation (video clip) of each of the young people and then organize a public discussion with them, with professional translators and interpreters and with the public on use of languages and translation as a process.
For the selection of the young people we will count on the help of the most important associations in Madrid (and in other big cities) of the most representative communities of foreign residents: Moroccans, Romanians, Polish, English, Chinese, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, etc.
